Achievement First Schools
Our flagship school, Amistad Academy, opened in New Haven in 1999 to prove that urban students can achieve at the same high levels as their affluent suburban counterparts. In 2003, after consistently surpassing district averages and demonstrating that their students could achieve on par with their peers statewide, the founders of Amistad Academy created Achievement First, a separate non-profit organization charged with using Amistad Academy's knowledge and best practices to have a greater impact on urban education. In 2004, Achievement First opened Elm City College Preparatory Elementary and Middle Schools in New Haven and, in 2006, Amistad Academy expanded from a single middle school to include an elementary and high school. Then, in 2007, Achievement First expanded to Bridgeport with the opening of Achievement First Bridgeport Academy Middle School. In 2008, the Connecticut network expanded once again to Hartford with the opening of Achievement First Hartford Academy Elementary and Middle Schools. Most recently, Achievement First Bridgeport Academy Elementary School opened in August 2010.
