Heraldo, a fifth-grader at AF North Brooklyn Prep Middle School, shares his journey of growth, and some tips and tricks he learned along the way. Tell us about yourself My name is Heraldo. I’m 10 years old. I’m in fifth grade. My favorite thing to do is draw and invent stuff. I was born in the Dominican Republic, and when I was three years old, I came to the United States. What is your favorite thing about going to school at Achievement First North Brooklyn Prep Middle School? My favorite thing about going to AF North Brooklyn Prep Middle is that there is a lot of support from teachers, especially when you are confused about something. They always explain and help us have a deeper understanding of things. Do you have any advice for students who want to improve in school? For students who want to improve, I would tell them to ask their teachers what kind of help they need. Is that what you do? Yes, I asked my teacher what I was good at and what I needed a little bit of help with. To prepare for the Mock ELA Assessment, I used my scholarly habits on my literature homework. A scholarly habit is like annotating text and writing my journal-based thinking jobs. That gives you an understanding of what to look for when you’re reading the text. I also suggest when you’re reading the questions to have them in your mind so when you’re reading the text you know what to look for. That’s great advice, Heraldo! So, what do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be an inventor because I love inventing stuff and making different gadgets! I don’t have any ideas yet, but something that got me into inventing is making architecture out of Legos. We can’t wait to see what Heraldo learns next!
