“I Didn’t Grow From Concrete”: An Alumna’s Story
Jun 27, 2018
AF alum and Wake Forest University student, Ciarra Velazquez, is making moves across the globe!
This summer, she studied environmental communication in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and explored debate and advocacy in London.
From climate action to cultural repatriation, Ciarra is showing what it means to be a global citizen and lifelong learner. We’re so proud!

We’re thrilled to introduce three incredible leaders to the Achievement First community!
Amy D’Angelo in Connecticut
Kristin Damo in New York
Tom McDermott in Rhode Island
As our new Regional Executive Directors, Amy, Kristin, and Tom will play a critical role in driving school success across our network. They will oversee the K-12 journey — or as we’re committed to at AF, supporting the K-16 journey — in each region, working closely with principals, regional superintendents, and community members to ensure every student receives an excellent education and every school thrives.
This is a major milestone in our work to deepen local leadership and bring decision-making even closer to the communities we serve. These new roles reflect our commitment to stronger connections with our students, families, and communities, and to ensuring our schools reflect the unique strengths, voices, and needs of each region.
Please join us in welcoming Amy, Kristin, and Tom, and in celebrating this exciting step toward a more community-centered future for Achievement First!

Huge congratulations to our AF alumni who graduated from college this spring! From Franklin & Marshall to Stanford, from Public Health to Performing Arts, you’ve done it all, and we’re so proud of you. Thank you to our partners at @kipp_forward_nyc for partnering with us to support their journeys beyond high school.
