"My presenter was awesome today! Her energy never died; she had my focus literally from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm!"

"Today was the first day of the rest of my life, and I already feel like I'm in the right place."

Fifth-grade teacher Stephanie Sun is one of four teachers nationwide awarded the 2015 Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice! This prestigious honor recognizes the nation’s most effective teachers working in high-poverty public schools. The New York Daily News story begins, "It is impossible for Stephanie Sun to contain her enthusiasm for teaching. She gushes about her fifth grade students at Achievement First Brownsville Middle School in Brooklyn, who delve into such complex topics as ancient Polynesian navigation and climate change in her English class. 'When kids are engaged and happy and feel confident and feel support — they can accomplish any task you put in front of them,' said Sun.

What happens when a group of incredibly dedicated and extremely talented teachers team up with smart and hard-working students with limitless potential? You create AF Amistad High School, an urban school where students from low-income communities regularly outperform their peers at schools in affluent towns and cities. You achieve 100% college acceptance rates for graduating seniors for six consecutive years. You are recognized as the #2 high school in the state of Connecticut on U.S. News & World Report’s list of best high schools. We are incredibly proud of the entire AF Amistad High “Team & Family,” and we know there is still so much work to be done in closing the achievement gap and preparing our scholars to make their mark on the world. We were thrilled to take another step forward as we moved into a new high school building with state-of-the-art facilities, and to attend its dedication earlier this summer.
