AF-Haiti Campaign Update

Category: Home

It is difficult to think that one year has already passed since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, 2010. So much was lost that day and during the weeks that followed – and many are still struggling to grasp the scope of the disaster.

We are grateful to the entire AF Team & Family for joining together to support over 300 students in rural Haiti – part of a community in a country of millions focused on survival, resilience, dignity, and hope. The 2011 campaign has already raised over $3,400 to continue supporting the 2 Haitian schools in need, and 7 additional AF schools just launched their campaign activities this week. We look forward to sharing additional updates through January 2011.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary and continue expressing our gratitude for the network-wide support, the AF-Haiti Campaign team has put together the following messages:

  • Hanika Payan, School Counselor (AF Brownsville Elementary)
On January 12, 2010 the lives of many Haitian members of the AF community were changed forever. Many of us had loved ones who lost their homes, jobs, communities, even those that lost their lives. After the earthquake I was surprised and honored by how quickly members of the AF community mobilized together to help lend their financial and emotional support; between penny drives, fundraisers, pen pals, journal writing activities, and the sponsoring of two schools in Haiti, the AF community went above and beyond any expectation I may have had in response to this natural disaster. It is humbling to know that I work at an organization that cares about our global community and educating its youth. A year later, despite all the trouble and turmoil Haiti continues to experience, I am proud of the fact that we are continuing our partnership with Hope for Haiti – not because of the attention and accolades it might bring us, but simply because it is the right thing to do. On behalf of the AF Haitian community, thank you. L'Union Fait La Force (Unity Makes Strength).
