Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Elementary provides students with the academic and character skills they to need to graduate from top colleges, succeed in a competitive world, and serve as the next generation of leaders in our communities. Our students are starting on the journey to lead true change in our communities from the first day of school. In order to achieve this, we equip students with a college-focused education, as well as community leadership projects that teach them to honor their own voices and those of their communities—school, peer, city and family. Through joyful, student-centered, rigorous instruction, unwaveringly high academic and character expectations for all students, and an appreciation and celebration of each child as an individual, Achievement First Ilumniar Mayoral Academy Elementary develops self-confident leaders who believe they can forge the path to accomplish any goal they set to better themselves and their communities—now and in the future.
Kevin Lohela is the founding principal of Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy. To prepare for this role, he participated in a rigorous leadership training through Achievement First’s Principal-in-Residence program at Achievement First Endeavor Elementary in Brooklyn. Prior to his work at Achievement First Endeavor, he served for five years as the academic dean of Achievement First Crown Heights Elementary School in Brooklyn. He began his teaching career in the Bronx teaching third and fourth grades at P.S. 196. He earned his B.A. in philosophy at Wesleyan University. Mr. Lohela is thrilled to work closely with Rhode Island families and communities to help all children develop positive growth-mindsets, exceptional character, and excellent academic and critical thinking skills that will enable them to be successful in college and in life.
