This spring, the AF Amistad Academy High School Academic Decathlon team competed at the National Academic Decathlon competition in California — the result of months of studying, practice, and preparation, including a strong showing at the State competition at MIT. Every single Amistad scholar earned at least one Top 10 finish across the competition's ten events! Among the many individual highlights:
  • Miguel Juarez finished 4th overall
  • Gavin Jeffers earned 8th place among all competitors, was voted Team MVP by his teammates, and received a $250 scholarship
  • David Mendez earned the highest overall team score and received a $250 scholarship
The trip to nationals was supported in part by the Amistad community's generosity during AF Impact Week, Achievement First's annual fundraising campaign that helps schools fund opportunities beyond their regular budgets. "The hard work, discipline, and academic skills these scholars developed throughout this season are victories that will stay with them long after high school and into their college careers." — Coaches Martin Lechuga and Blake Fisher Congratulations to the Amistad Academy Academic Decathlon team, their coaches, their families, and everyone who helped make this season possible!
