The Importance of Understanding: Five Resources for Cultivating Diversity & Inclusiveness

Category: News, Home

The 2014-15 school year has come to an end, but we know the process of learning and growing never stops. At Achievement First, we are deeply invested in professional development, and we want to make sure that everyone has resources to build their careers. Our network of schools have focused on the importance of diversity & inclusiveness and in creating an open, welcoming environment for all of our students, teachers, leaders and every member of our “Team & Family.” Now more than ever, we believe it’s incredibly important to cultivate conversations about diversity and inclusiveness in our community and our world. Below are five diversity and inclusiveness resources we recently shared:

  • In this TED Talk, novelist Chimamanda Adichie provides powerful insight into the importance of diversity and "the danger of a single story."
  • This Achievement First diversity session resource is a great tool through which teachers can examine what shapes their own multidimensional identity.
  • Facing History and Ourselves, an organization devoted to combating racism and prejudice through education, offers many humanities resources.
  • On the Teaching Tolerance website, leaders and teachers gain tools for continuing to expand their own multicultural awareness and for translating this learning into their classrooms.
  • This Achievement First reading list is a guide to great books to help teachers and school leaders better understand diversity & inclusiveness.
