Hooray!

Friday mornings at AF Linden Elementary are a time for celebration for both students and families. Families get to hear students, in their loud and proud voices, recite the AF Linden creed at Community Circle. This chant is not only an opportunity for students to show their school spirit, but also to reinforce the core Linden values. Our students practice more than just joyful rigor, but strong character values as well.

Students have spent the first three months of school learning each value, but that is only the beginning. Lyannie, a first-grade Syracuse University student told us, “We show love by being kind to others.” Yes, students can recite the definitions, but what does showing the core value of “Love” look like, sound like and feel like at AF Linden?  Every day, students are wiggling their fingers to show love during that hard “Think, Read, Discuss” question, saying “that’s OK” after an apology for a conflict during the recess rush and so much more.

Our students act out scenarios, turning and talking about positive behavior choices when having good manners and showing love may not come so naturally. Students are also paired with partners who they are secretly watching to give that “I see you” shout out at the end of the week in a note.  During Morning Meeting, our students will be reading several great books as they figure out how to show and tell their first Linden value:

  • “If Everyone Did” by Jo Ann Stover
  • “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein
  • “That’s What Friends Do”  by Kathryn Cave

The AF Linden core values of love, integrity, never give up, dream, enthusiasm and no limits are constant reminders that strong character values are essential in helping develop well-rounded students.
