Building Student Leaders: An AF First-Grader Inspires a Crowd of 1,500 in Hartford

Category: News, Home

On May 7, more than 1,500 parents, students, educators and supporters came together in Hartford. With dynamic speakers, chants and music, people from across Connecticut called on legislators to provide a great education for every child.

Several outstanding members of the AF Team & Family addressed the crowd, including parent Claudia Phillips and AF Hartford High student Shyheim, who spoke before introducing Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy.

One of the day’s most powerful speakers was also the youngest—Achievement First Bridgeport Academy Elementary first-grader Imani. With passion and confidence, she took to the podium and told the crowd in the words she had written, “All kids need a place where they can grow their brains as big as they can get.”

Imani closed her speech by saying, “I think every kid should get the chance to attend a school like Achievement First Bridgeport Academy. Thank you for your leadership of our state. Please help other students like me.”
